The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aim at ending all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change. With our project, we want to help and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

On a social aspect:

Education

SDG #4 - quality education & SDG #10 - reduced inequalities:

With Musana Ferry, transportation will be secured and children will be able to access their school in a safe and reliable mode. Besides, further support will include books purchase and school supplies, enhancement in internet access and IT equipment, in energy production & supply – contributing to offer a better standard of education and reduce inequalities since more kids will go to school and enjoy facilities with decent learning tools.

Infrastructure

SDG #9 - industry, innovation and infrastructure & SDG #11 - sustainable cities and communities:

We have imagined a solar ferry that can transport all students to and from school for free. The ferry is being built using local material and resources. It will be owned by the Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School and will support the community as a means of transportation across the lake during school days. It will also be used as an emergency boat to bring patients to the hospital on the island.

On an environmental aspect:

Today more than ever, we must think green and this motto has been a major component of our project, as we have been engaging with experts from university in order to imagine an economical, sustainable and environmental-friendly solution.

SDG #6 - clean water and sanitation; SDG #7 - affordable and clean energy; SDG #13 - climate action; SDG #14 - life below water & SDG #15 - life on land:

We are designing and building a solar ferry powered by the sun, that will be used as a daily transportation means on Lake Bunyonyi. The use of solar energy not only reduces the risk of water and surrounding vegetation to be polluted from leaking gasoline engines, but also implies low-cost maintenance on a daily basis.

On a collaborative aspect:

Our project demonstrates the positive outcome of how actors from different backgrounds can work together and build solutions.

SDG# 17 - partnerships for the goals:

Musana Ferry is a cross-sector partnership, a multi-stakeholder collaboration project composed of several partners, from the public sector as well as from the private sector, and civil society organizations:
